A Rose Garden Wonderland: Editorial Shooting in Portland, Oregon
This spring, I had the chance to travel with two incredible creative groups—Salt Lake City Inspired and Eternal Western Editorial—on a dream photography trip to Oregon. We planned and shot multiple sessions together with talented models and fellow photographers, and one of the highlights was shooting in the breathtaking International Rose Test Garden in Portland.
The garden felt like it stretched on forever, rows and rows of flowers in every direction. It was almost overwhelming how beautiful it was, but also a little tricky since it's open to the public and we were shooting during midday sun (not a photographer’s favorite light). Because of the bright light and steady stream of visitors, I took some time to scout out a more shaded corner of the garden that offered privacy and soft, filtered light. It ended up being the perfect hidden nook.
For this shoot, Marin—being the creative, bold, and stunning muse she is—put together and brought this amazing red look. A striking red dress and an oversized faux rose turned her into a walking flower herself. It instantly gave off Alice in Wonderland vibes!
We were mindful of the public space and made sure to pause for guests, keep pathways clear, and stay respectful of everyone enjoying the park. Luckily, Marin and I have worked together on many shoots before, so we move fast. When you shoot with someone a lot, you start syncing up without even needing to speak, it makes moments like this even more fun and creative.
There’s something magical about creating art in a location that’s already so full of life. Every shoot like this reminds me how grateful I am for the opportunity to travel, connect with other creatives, and make something completely unique in the moment.
Happy spring! And here’s to more blooms and more bold editorials!
