Lured InFashion Editorial with Marin | Shot at the Great Salt Lake
When Marin—an insanely talented model and creative director—pitched her fisherman-inspired concept to me, I was immediately hooked. She was sourcing a killer wardrobe and even wanted to use real fish as props. As we swapped inspiration and ideas, I sent her a location I love at the Great Salt Lake. The setting has everything: a marina with sailboats, stunning water views, high rocks, and endless light.
Knowing we’d be shooting during peak sunlight, I packed my portable flash: the Godox AD100Pro. Small but mighty, this flash is one of my go-to tools when I want to overpower the sun and create bold, vibrant images even in the brightest light.
My Lighting Setup
The sun was blazing the moment we arrived, which other than making us sweat, was perfect. I used the sun as a natural hair light and had Marin face me while I mounted the flash directly onto my camera body. I sometimes use a stand, but for this shoot, I wanted full mobility and the ability to move freely with the light.
I played around with my flash settings throughout the shoot but usually kept it around 1/16 to 1/32 power, depending on how close or far I was from Marin. That range gave me the perfect balance—just enough pop to shape her features and light her face without washing out the natural background.
Carrying the camera plus flash combo was heavy. I swear it felt like 20 pounds—though it’s more like 8—but it gave me the control I needed. (Also: shout out to my weightlifting routine. My shoulders are finally catching up with my gear.)
Editing with Intention
Once the shoot wrapped, I knew how I wanted to edit the series. I leaned into the punchiness of the flash and let the colors and shadows speak. Marin’s eyes are naturally piercing, and I enhanced them in post to make sure they stood out.
The styling? Absolutely killer. Every piece Marin curated elevated the concept and gave us a perfect contrast against the natural elements.
Press Features
I submitted the final images to two fashion magazines—and both accepted! One of the publications is Artells Magazine, and the other is Mob Journal. One is already in print, and I’ll be getting the tear sheets soon. It’s such a surreal honor seeing my work in physical print!
