My Favorite Tips for Beginner Models

From a photographer who loves a good creative collaboration

As a photographer, I’ve worked with so many different types of models—and I can definitely tell when someone’s just starting out versus when someone is in their flow. But here’s the truth: being new doesn’t mean you can’t be amazing. Some of the best shoots I’ve done were with models who came prepared, brought their creativity, and weren’t afraid to play.

Here are five of my favorite things beginner models can do that make a huge difference—and why I love working with models who do them!

1. Flow Through Your Poses

When a model moves through poses like they’re dancing—smooth, steady, and expressive—it’s absolute magic. I don’t mean full-on dancing (unless that’s your vibe), but that kind of effortless posing where you’re always evolving the shot.

That rhythm helps me so much as a photographer. While I’m busy juggling settings, angles, light, and location—you moving confidently through different shapes gives me the space to capture something truly epic. And often, it’s in those in-between moments that we strike gold.

2. Bring Your Style to the Shoot

When I collaborate with models, I love seeing personal style shine through. Whether it’s in your choice of wardrobe, your hair and makeup ideas, or your go-to poses—it adds so much depth to the final images.

Some of my favorite shoots happened because a model brought a killer outfit or threw out an idea that transformed the whole vibe. Don’t be afraid to get involved! I’ll usually help style the looks with you, but having your creative flair in the mix always takes things to another level.

3. Confidence is Everything (Even If You Have to Fake It at First)

I get it, confidence isn’t always easy, especially if you're new. But trust me, it shows in the photos. The more you believe in yourself, the more powerful the image becomes.

I’ll always hype you up during the shoot (seriously, I’m the loudest one on set), and I promise no pose is too weird to try. Some of the best shots happen when we experiment. So if you have an idea, try it. If it’s off, I’ll help guide and adjust you. We’re in it together!

4. Use Your Hands—Elegantly

Your arms and hands can make or break a pose. Try to keep soft, elegant shapes: slightly bent joints, pinky toward the camera, and avoid showing the back of the hand or your palm flat-on.

It might seem small, but it makes a big visual difference. Models who know how to use their whole body—including their arms—bring a kind of artistry to the frame that I love to capture. See how the model here, Marin, is always elegantly moving her arms, and her movement goes all the way to her fingertips? Even her fingertips look intentional! That level of grace adds so much dimension to a photo and brings a still image to life.

5. Come Prepared

Yes, I carry things like fashion tape, safety pins, a little hairspray, and combs in my photography bag—but it’s always amazing when models bring their own kit, too. One time a model brought eyelash glue to set and it saved the day!

Think of the little things that could go wrong and pack like a pro. Confidence isn’t just about your pose—it comes from knowing you’re ready for anything.

Whether you're just starting your modeling journey or looking to level up your presence on set, these five habits go a long way. I love working with models who bring energy, creativity, and professionalism to the table. And if you're reading this, I hope to shoot with you soon!
